COSHH Assessment — Lime Mortar (Natural Hydraulic Lime / NHL)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers lime mortar based on natural hydraulic lime (NHL) — a calcium silicate and calcium hydroxide blend used in heritage conservation, masonry repair and construction for pointing, rendering and bedding. Strongly alkaline when wet; may contain trace crystalline silica.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name (Lime Mortar / Hydraulic Lime), chemical name (NHL; calcium silicates and calcium hydroxide), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — dust inhalation irritating airways; ingestion causing alkaline burns; wet lime causing progressive skin burns; severe eye damage from lime contact; specific first aid for each route
- Alkaline burn and silica hazard — wet lime is strongly alkaline (pH >12) causing chemical burns that develop slowly; trace crystalline silica may increase long-term respiratory disease risk
- Workplace exposure limits — calcium hydroxide TWA 5 mg/m³; respirable crystalline silica TWA 0.1 mg/m³ where present, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Corrosive pictograms
- PPE requirements — including safety goggles, PVC or neoprene gloves, coveralls and RPE for dusty operations
- Emergency procedures — wet spill containment and disposal; dry spill vacuum or wet methods — do not dry sweep
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where lime mortar is used, including:
- Heritage conservation and listed building contractors
- Masonry and stonework contractors
- General builders undertaking pointing and rendering
- Restoration and refurbishment specialists
